Salary alignment starts before the first interview
Compensation surprises waste time for everyone. A clear salary conversation early in the process lets recruiters assess whether an opportunity is realistic before either side invests in several rounds of interviews.
Define what the range actually means
Approve a range for the role before sourcing. Specify whether the amount refers to annual fixed pay, total cash compensation, or a broader cost to company figure. Explain variable pay, benefits, joining payments, and equity separately where they apply.
A candidate comparing ₹20 lakh fixed with ₹22 lakh total compensation needs the components, not just the headline. Use plain language and show how uncertain or performance dependent amounts are treated.
Ask about expectations, not just history
The role’s value and the candidate’s relevant ability should inform the discussion. Ask what compensation would make a move workable and which elements matter to the candidate. Current salary alone can anchor a negotiation to circumstances that are unrelated to this job.
Do not read flexibility as permission to keep the range vague. If the candidate’s expectations exceed the approved budget, decide whether the role, scope, or budget can change before progressing further.
Keep alignment current
Record the conversation and reconfirm it when the role changes. A promotion in scope, different work location, or revised joining date may affect what is acceptable. The hiring manager and recruiter should share the same understanding.
Before the offer, review the exact components and any conditions in writing through the employer’s normal process. Monitor withdrawals caused by compensation surprises; they can reveal unclear briefs or inconsistent communication. Salary alignment supports a better decision, but never guarantees offer acceptance.
Separate candidate pay from recruitment fees
A candidate’s salary expectations and the employer’s recruitment fee are separate conversations. Syncro1 documents the applicable commercial terms before a mandate begins. No upfront recruitment fee and a 30 to 60 day post joining invoicing schedule are subject to the signed engagement terms. Clarify both compensation and commercial terms before interviews begin.
Put it into practice
Publish an approved range internally, define its components, and discuss candidate expectations before scheduling a lengthy interview process.
